Resolve name conflicts

Choose what happens when a copied or moved item has the same name as an item at the destination.

When an item with the same name already exists at the destination, MeiFiles pauses and opens the File Conflict sheet. It shows the Source and the Destination item side by side, with the size and the modification date of each.

The Copy dialog, which starts an operation that can lead to a name conflict.

Choose what to do#

ButtonResult
Keep BothCopies or moves the item under a new name, such as Budget 2026 copy.numbers. If that name is taken too, MeiFiles adds a number: Budget 2026 copy 2.numbers. This is the default.
ReplaceRemoves the item at the destination, then copies or moves the new one.
SkipLeaves both items as they are and goes on with the next one.
Rename…Shows a New name field. Type a name, then click Rename.
CancelStops the whole operation.

Caution: Replace on a folder replaces the whole folder. The two folders are not merged, and files that exist only in the destination folder are removed.

Answer once for every conflict#

  1. Turn on Apply to all remaining conflicts.
  2. Click Skip or Replace.

MeiFiles uses the same answer for the rest of the operation and does not ask again. Keep Both and Rename… always apply to one item.

Undo a replace#

A copy can be undone with Edit > Undo File Operation (⌘Z). Undo removes the copied items. It does not bring back an item that Replace removed. To keep a way back, choose Keep Both when you are not sure.

Tip: To see what an operation will do before any conflict appears, use Preview only (dry run) in the Copy or Move dialog. See Copy and move files.
