Compress and extract files

Pack files and folders into a ZIP archive, or unpack an archive into the folder that holds it.

Compress files to send or store them in less space. Extract an archive to get its files back.

Compress files to a ZIP archive#

  1. Select the files and folders in the active pane.
  2. Choose File > Compress to ZIP…, or press Option-F5 (⌥F5).

MeiFiles creates the archive in the same folder:

  • One item is compressed to an archive with the same name, for example notes.zip.
  • Several items are compressed to Archive.zip.

If that name is already taken, MeiFiles adds a number, for example Archive 2.zip. It never adds files to an existing archive.

To remove the new archive, choose Edit > Undo File Operation (⌘Z).

Extract an archive#

  1. Put the cursor on the archive.
  2. Choose File > Extract Archive, or press Option-F6 (⌥F6).

MeiFiles extracts the contents into the folder that holds the archive. A large archive shows a progress sheet. Click Cancel in it to stop.

Caution: Files with the same names as files in the archive are replaced without asking. To be safe, move the archive into an empty folder first. Or open the archive and copy only the files you need.

Extract only some files#

  1. Put the cursor on the archive and press ⌘O to open it.
  2. Open the destination folder in the other pane.
  3. Select the files you need and press F5.

This also asks before it replaces a file. See Open archives like folders.
